Want a Taste of New Orleans? Hilton is Offering Exclusive Discounts for Must-Visit Restaurants and Tours in NOLA this Summer

I was hosted by Hilton and some of their restaurant partners for this experience.  The opinions are my own.  I was not financially compensated for this post.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: New Orleans is the best food city in the US.  Any trip to the Crescent City should be experienced through it's fabulous food and drink.  On every trip we take to NOLA, we add to our list of best restaurants and must-visit spots (you can see some of our other favorite stops in and around New Orleans in this post about our road trip to New Orleans, and this Travel Tuesday post on more must-eat spots in NOLA).  This latest trip delivered several more amazing experiences to add to our list thanks to Hilton's Taste of New Orleans.

Taste of New Orleans is a summer campaign by Hilton that offers guests discounted parking, a welcome cocktail on check-in, and exclusive discounts to the hottest restaurants and tours in town for those staying with participating Hilton hotels in New Orleans between now and September 10.  Just visit and select a hotel to book your Taste of New Orleans reservation.  I had the chance to experience this with the Hilton New Orleans/St. Charles Avenue just last weekend.  Keep reading to see my reviews of each tour and restaurant we had the chance to visit for Taste of New Orleans as we soaked up the culture and cuisine of this fabulous city.

Wedding Planning in the Digital Age – You Don’t Have to Take on Life’s Mysteries Alone

I have been compensated for this post by Oros. However, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

In less than one week my husband and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. When I look back, on one hand I'm amazed by how fast the time has flown by. But on the other hand, it seems like it was a lifetime ago. So much was different: we didn't have our kids, we had a lot fewer lines around our eyes and on our foreheads, and life was slower and a bit less connected. Being less connected, I didn't yet have an iPhone with access to internet in my hands, and Pinterest didn't yet exist. Take that in for a second - I planned my wedding without Pinterest or iPhone apps!

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago... how different it would have been if I was planning my wedding this year instead of 10 years ago. I started thinking about how I use the new Oros app (which you can get for free for iOS or Android here: for quick, trusted recommendations for local restaurants (whether here in Austin or in other cities when I'm traveling), or for things to do with my kids in Austin. I realized that Oros is perfect for all kinds of local referrals and recommendations wherever you are. You can also connect with other users nationwide for advice and ideas (read my full review of the Oros app here).

Travel Tuesday: One Day in Finland - What to Do with Kids during a Quick Trip to Helsinki

The #FabFam went to Scandinavia (Sweden and Finland) for spring break this year.  You can see more in my posts about our two days in Stockholm and about our time with in Sweden's Arctic Circle at the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi.  Today I am sharing about our quick jaunt to Helsinki, Finland.

We got the idea to add Helsinki to our itinerary from a friend, who told me that there are overnight cruise boats between the Swedish and Finnish capitals.  When I looked into this, I discovered it to be really cost- and time-effective, as you travel overnight (while you sleep), and the cost offsets a night in a hotel room (which is not cheap in Scandinavia).  In our itinerary, we had just enough time to spend one day in Helsinki.  While we'd definitely need more time there to do it justice, it was a great way to introduce ourselves to this very family-friendly city.
When we were doing research on what to do with the kids during a quick trip there, we came across this is a great post with lots of things to do with kids in Helsinki.  Some of the top recommendations included Suomenlinna Fortress (Sveaborg), Vessiko submarine, Seurassari Open-Air Museum, the Natural History Museum, they Heureka Interactive Center, Horseshoe Finnish Toy Museum, Linnanmaki Amusement Park, Korkeasaari Zoo, and the Botanical Garden (Kasvitieteellinen puutarha).  Keep reading to see what we did, and more about how to get to Helsinki from Stockholm.

The boys had a lot of fun on the Viking cruise from Stockholm to Helsinki (but were really cold when we stepped outside for this photo)

Flashback Friday: Our Old Hollywood-Themed Engagement Photo Session

My husband and I celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary this month.  TENTH.  Where in the heck did the time go?  Even more crazy is that it will be 15 years total together for us in October.  It's been about 15 years since this dashingly handsome man walked into mine, out of all the gin joints in all the world.  One day, I'll write our love story, but today, I'll open a chapter of it for you.

10 years ago, I didn't have Fab Everyday.   But I did have my planning bio and a blog on while I was planning my wedding.  In fact, all that sort of led to the creation of Fab Everyday (but more on that later this year when I celebrate Fab Everyday's 10th anniversary).  I documented all of the details for planning my wedding on The Knot so that it might save another person time and effort when planning theirs.  Knot bios included inspiration collages, reviews, and so much more.  See, young whipper-snapper, this was before Pinterest existed when we had to make our own planning and inspiration boards (after walking uphill in the snow with our Blackberries).

Canning 101 and a Mixed Berry Jam recipe from Ball® Home Canning

I partnered with Ball® Home Canning for this post.  The opinions are my own based on my experience.  I was not financially compensated for this post.

It's canning season, and Ball® Home Canning is highlighting why canning and fresh preserving is "time well spent."  They are sharing tips and monthly recipes on the Time Well Spent site here.  With all the delicious berries in season right now, I decided to try this Mixed Berry Jam recipe, which our whole family loved cooking and eating!

What to Do In Austin: Deep Eddy Vodka Tasting Room

I was hosted for a tasting and distillery tour by Deep Eddy Vodka.  The opinions are my own based on my experience.

I was invited on a media trip to visit the Deep Eddy Vodka Tasting Room and take a tour of the distillery.  It was so cool learning about the history of Deep Eddy and their process for distilling and bottling their vodkas.  Let me tell you - I already can't wait to experience the Tasting Room again for a girl's weekend in Austin.  A visit to Deep Eddy's Tasting Room would be a perfect activity for a bachelorette party or birthday celebration, or for anyone looking for something fun to do to "keep it local" when visiting Austin.
