Golden Hour Family Photo Session with Austin Photographer Jessica Rockowitz Photography

I received a complimentary family photo session from Jessica Rockowitz Photography.  The opinions are my own.  I was not financially compensated for this post.

Believe it or not, we have never done a formal family photo shoot with all four of us.  Shocking, I know!  And since I spend so much time in front of the camera myself or snapping photos of the kids, we forget to take pictures of our whole family together even though much of our life is photographed.  I always notice this when the holidays roll around, since I can rarely find a picture of all of us for our holiday cards.  This year, we decided to change that, and book a professional family photo shoot with Austin's Jessica Rockowitz Photography.  Jessica suggested a shoot during golden hour, and the results were magical!

Jessica specializes in lifestyle and family photography.  As a mother herself, she has a way with kids (more on that below).  She also offers special packages for influencers who are looking to keep a steady stream of professional-quality photos in their feed!  I'm excited to announce that she is offering a family session giveaway to one of my Austin followers!  Follow @fabeverydayblog on Facebook for the giveaway post and details.

Thoroughly enchanting! Disney's Beauty and the Beast at ZACH Theatre should be your next Austin family date night

We received complimentary tickets to this show.  The opinions are my own.  I was not financially compensated for this post.

One of our all-time favorite family date night ideas is going to the theatre.  ZACH Theatre in Austin (celebrating their 85th year - #zach85) is a longtime favorite of ours with their variety of family shows.  Every time we see a play at ZACH the kids are blown-away by the magic of it all.  I can't tell you how much I value this... in a world where kids are surrounded by high-definition media with the latest technology and special effects, it makes me so happy to see how much the art of live theatre can still impress and enthrall them.  ZACH's latest headlining production, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, was even more than that.  To use a theme from the show itself, we were absolutely enchanted.  The cast, crew, orchestra, and production had us all spellbound from the first "bonjour," and even now, days later.

Lighter Air Fryer Fried Pickles with Sriracha Mayo Recipe

I've been experimenting with recipe development for my air fryer over the last few weeks.  See last week's recipe for Air Fryer Sweet Potato Tots, check out some other air fryer recipes in this old post of mine on air frying vs. deep frying, and stay tuned for more new recipes for the air fryer in the coming weeks.

Today I am sharing a recipe for air fryer fried pickles (along with a spicy Sriracha mayo dipping sauce).  These are a much lighter alternative to regular fried pickles, but still turned out crispy and delicious!  I developed this recipe as part of the Allrecipes Allstars Tastemakers program.  Rate, review, and photograph my recipe for Air Fryer Fried Pickles on Allrecipes here, and see the full recipe along with some of my cooking tips below.

Reasons to Find Yourself in Rockport - Fulton, TX, 'The Charm of the Texas Coast'

I was hosted by Rockport-Fulton and some of the local businesses in this post.  The opinions are my own based on my own experience.  I was not financially compensated for this post.

The #FabFam has been exploring the special destinations and getaways in our own state this summer.  We've been referring to it as our "summer of Texas fun."  Our latest adventure was to a beautiful part of the Texas coast that we'd not yet visited: Rockport-Fulton.  Our few days in Rockport were truly a highlight of our summer - it was relaxing, peaceful, and FUN for the entire family.  There is quite a bit to do and explore in this area, as you can see yourself on the Rockport-Fulton website.  Today, I am sharing our recommendations based on the amazing itinerary laid out for us by our host, the Rockport-Fulton Chamber.  Keep reading to see where to stay, what to do, and (always important) where to eat during a getaway to Rockport-Fulton, "The Charm of the Texas Coast."

Rockport-Fulton invited us to experience the area to see firsthand how much the region has recovered from last year's devastating hurricane season.  This part of the coast was hit especially hard when Harvey made landfall.  Over the last year the townspeople, along with support from all over our state (#TexasStrong), have been rebuilding.  They want to let vacationers know that #RockportIsBack and ready for tourism!  Beaches, activities, restaurants, and accommodations are open for business, and through good ol' Texan resilience, better than ever.  Take that, Harvey!

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Tots Recipe - A Tasty, Lighter Cooking Alternative

I love experimenting with my air fryer, and have been developing several new air fryer recipes over the last few weeks.  Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks, and check out some other air fryer recipes in this old post of mine on air frying vs. deep frying.

The recipe I am sharing today is for air fryer sweet potato tater tots.  These are a lighter alternative to regular tater tots, but are still delicious!  Mine also have a little bit of a kick due to adding Cajun seasoning.  I developed this recipe as part of the Allrecipes Allstars pilot Tastemakers program.  Rate, review, and photograph my recipe for Air Fryer Sweet Potato Tots on Allrecipes here, and see the full recipe along with some of my cooking tips below.

Travel Style: What to Wear for a Vacation in Paris, France

Disclosure: This post contains some affiliate links, which means that if you make a purchase using the links, I may receive a commission.  This does not cost you anything additional, and helps me to keep the rest of my content free, so thank you!

My husband and I went to France earlier this month to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.  Instead of my usual monthly What I Wore #OOTD round-up, this month I am rounding-up the outfits I wore in Paris.  Now, if you know anything about me at all, you'd know that fashion and travel are both important parts of my life.  Therefore, it should come as zero surprise that I was planning my outfits for Paris well in advance of the trip.  In fact, I even had a few pieces purchased before the trip was even booked!  And since Paris is especially Instagrammable (see my friend Katie of Kalanchoe's post on An Instagram Guide to Paris here for some great photo location inspo), I put a lot of love into curating the fashion that I would wear and photograph during our vacation.

If you're deciding what to wear for a trip to Paris, I hope this helps you plan what to shop and pack for your Parisian trip.  Keep reading for details and shoppable links for all the looks, plus the location where the pictures were taken.  Be sure to pin these to your Paris inspiration boards!

Celebrate Summer with a Family Grill Night - in Your Backyard!

This post is sponsored by Lightlife.  As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Our family LOVES summer.  Traveling, water fun, lots of time together, cooking outdoors, long days... what's not to love?  Well, I guess the only thing not to love right now is that we only have a bit of summer left!  But we are going to make the most of it!  One idea we had was to have an outdoor grill night, cooking over the fire.  It's too hot to spend a weekend camping (though we love to camp), so we decided to bring some of our favorite parts of camping to our backyard instead, with Lightlife.

I first met Lightlife at the Mom 2.0 Summit this year.  They were grilling up some Smart Dogs, which I remember smelling so good, you know, that tantalizing smell of meat cooking over an open grill. I didn't even realize they were plant-based at first, and was even more surprised with the taste when I built myself a masterpiece at their vegan chili dog station! I couldn't wait for the rest of my family to try it.

Free or cheap non-screentime ideas for keeping kids engaged during the summer

I have been compensated for this post by Oros. However, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

It's that time of summer where it's getting harder to keep the kids engaged. Is it just me, or do you also worry about them losing a lot of what they learned during the school year while they laze around the house in front of any number of screens? It's become a real concern for me, especially as the temperatures rise, which seems to increase my kids' screentime as their outdoor time becomes more limited. Since the new Oros messaging app (which you can download for free for iOS or Android here: http://bit.ly/fab-everyday) has become my go-to for all sorts of tips, not just for restaurant recommendations and local expert reviews, I decided to put a question out there to the Oros community.

Oros puts real recommendations from real people in the palm of your hands quickly, saving you a lot of time Googling and checking review sites. Its simple question and answer function allows me to target users in a local area or by other interests and demographics for their recommendations. It connects me with local experts in minutes! You can read my full review of the Oros app here, and see how I crowd-sourced ideas for the ultimate family date day in Austin using Oros here

Last week I asked parents of school-age kids on the Oros app about non-screentime ideas for keeping kids engaged, ideally in an educational and/or creative way, during the summer. As always, I asked, and Oros delivered! Here are my top tips sourced from Oros users on non-screentime activities for kids during the summer. A bonus is that they are all free or cheap!

Scenic Loire Valley Chateaux Driving Route from Paris to Amboise

When my husband and I were planning our 10th anniversary trip to France, one of my prerequisites was to stay in a chateau.  I wanted to live that princess life!  In doing research, we learned the best place to stay would be the Loire Valley for the huge amount of chateaux available to visit or stay in.  More to come on the chateau we ultimately chose for our accommodation, but today I am sharing the scenic chateaux drive we took to get from Paris to the Loire Valley.  We rented a car on our way out of Paris and drove this route ourselves in a single day, but the itinerary was inspired by this comprehensive, six-day Loire Valley Chateaux tour from Esprit de France

Driving in France (outside of Paris) is not very intimidating, with well-maintained roads, so I recommend renting a car and doing this scenic Loire Valley drive yourself.  Not only is it a short drive from Paris to the Val de Loire, having a car also gives you the flexibility to stop and tour different chateaux on your own schedule.

Here's our recommended scenic driving route starting in Paris and ending in Amboise, with five chateaux you can visit along the way.  This takes you off the main freeways onto a more scenic route without adding too much time to your driving itinerary.

Stop 1: Château de Chambord.  Why not start big?  Chateau de Chambord is Loire Valley's largest chateau.  Currently celebrating its 500th anniversary, there is a lot of history, along with architectural marvel, in this chateau and its grounds.

Lessons in Home Canning and Preserving + Honey Cinnamon Pears Recipe

I partnered with Ball® Home Canning for this post. The opinions are my own based on my experience. I was not financially compensated for this post.

It's canning season, and Ball® Home Canning is highlighting why canning and fresh preserving is "time well spent."  They are sharing tips and monthly recipes on the Time Well Spent site here.  This month, I decided to try this Honey Cinnamon Pears recipe, which are great to eat with oatmeal, on top of ice cream, or even just on their own straight from the jar!

New to canning?  You'll want to see last month's Mixed Berry Jam recipe and Canning 101 tips here.

What to do during a long layover in Iceland: Blue Lagoon + DIY Golden Circle driving tour

On the way home from our anniversary trip to France (more on that later), my husband and I had the chance to explore a bit of Iceland during a long layover in Reykjavik.  Today, I am sharing our tips on getting the most out of a long layover in Iceland, including a visit to the Blue Lagoon and a DIY driving tour of the Golden Circle route.

Our layover was 22 hours long, which allowed us to spend the night.  We decided to rent a car, which I recommend, as taxis are quite pricey, we arrived too late for the Flybus to take us where we needed to go, and it allowed us to DIY our sight-seeing tours based on our timeline.

Check out this YouTube video of our DIY Golden Circle driving tour, and save it for quick reference:

Kicking off our summer of family fun in Texas in the most epic way at Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark in Grand Prairie

Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark hosted my family to a visit for review purposes. The opinions are my own. I was not financially compensated for this post.

Though we’ve lived in Texas for over seven years now, there is still so much to see and do in our state!  This summer the #FabFam has decided to do as much as we can here locally, and really explore the great things our state has to offer.  We are calling it “the summer of Texas fun,” and a few weeks ago we kicked it off, well epically, with a visit at Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark.

Epic Waters, which just opened in January 2018, is located in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area (in Grand Prairie, TX).   It is easily accessible from north or central Texas.   There are a lot of things that make it epic (more on that below), but arguably the best thing about Epic Waters is that you can enjoy it year-round.  The 80,000 square-foot indoor waterpark has a retractable roof and a climate-controlled interior, meaning you can be comfortable in it whether it’s the blazing humidity of summer, or the golf ball-sized hailstorms of winter in Texas.

6 Accessories You Need for This Fall

I have worked in collaboration with one of our partners to provide you with the below post.

These long summer days will soon be coming to an end, which means fall (and all things pumpkin) are just around the corner. With its cool air, vibrant leaves, and the scent of holidays in the air, fall is our favorite! Boots and sweaters and hoodies, oh my! It’s time to pull out those autumn favorites and dress them up with some fun accessories you’ll love for fall. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Blazers
Blazers aren’t just for work anymore. They’re perfect for all occasions. You can wear them with just about anything. Put one on over jeans and a tee for a casual daytime look. Or pair it with a cute dress and Coach clutch for a dressier look. Find a tailored style that is flattering and it’s sure to become a favorite.

2. Scarves
This one kind of goes without saying, but we can’t have a fall accessories list without mentioning this fall fashion must! Scarves are unbelievably versatile. Have you seen the YouTube videos that show you umpteen ways to wear a scarf? Definitely worth a watch, if not. Also, try wearing them as headbands, or tying them to your favorite tote for a little pop. Check out stylish scarves from Novica.com.

Planning My Hollywood Glam Wedding

10 years ago today, I married my best friend, my life partner, and my lifelong epic true love.  After all this time, I had never gotten around to documenting my wedding planning here on the blog.  I decided that at the 10-year mark, it was about time (after finally posting my Old Hollywood-themed engagement photos the other week).  I am always so inspired by others' creativity online, and want to pay it forward in case it helps to inspire others.  So today, I am sharing my wedding planning details.

The theme was driven both by our style, and also by the venue itself.  We wanted a classic, Hollywood glam feel, but were also drawn to the rustic vibes of Calamigos Ranch in the mountains above Malibu.  We ended up thinking of our wedding as "Katherine Hepburn goes on a picnic in the country."  The colors were romantic and glamorous (black, white, red, and silver in satin tones), but the flowers evoked more of a textural, country feel.

Back when I was planning this wedding 11-ish years ago, we didn't have Pinterest.  What we did have was The Knot, and most of the ideas and vendor recommendations that inspired my planning were from local message boards and the "planning bios" of other brides.  Some of the girls I met through those boards are still in my life today, and are some of my best friends.  A lot of the info I have in today's post is adapted from my old planning bio on The Knot.

First, I have a few highlights from the day itself.  Then, keep scrolling for lots of detail photos, all my vendor reviews, and resource links.  I hope you enjoy reliving this planning process with me, and I hope I can inspire some of you for your own special day!

A cooler, more comfortable night's sleep with SensorGel® Advanced iCOOL pillows

I received samples of these pillows for review purposes.  The opinions are my own based on my experience using the product.  I was not financially compensated for this post.

It is HOT in Texas this time of year.  The hardest part is that it never seems to cool down, not even at night.  I don't know about you, but I am much more restless at night when I am hot.

Despite the fact that the summer weather is in full swing, I have had some of the best sleep these last few weeks since receiving a pair of Advanced iCOOL Gel Memory Foam Gusset Pillows that provide a cooler and more comfortable night's sleep (learn more about how it work in this YouTube video).  Click here to purchase yours at Macy's (they come in standard or king sizes): https://bit.ly/2IWEx9K.

Idea for a Date Night in Austin: New Downtown Bar Academia has Launched a New Menu

If you're looking for date night ideas in Austin, TX, check out new bar Academia (208 W. 4th Street)!  Opened in March by former Bar Rescue co-star Russell Davis, Academia just released a new food menu last month.  Created by their new chef, Victor Sandoval (formerly of Parkside), the food menu at Academia was designed to complement their signature craft cocktails.  I had the opportunity to sample many of Academia's drinks and snacks at their new menu media preview event.  I can heartily recommend Academia as the perfect place to go before a show, after an evening out in downtown, or even an after-work happy hour (Happy Hour at Academia is every day 5-8pm, with $6 classic cocktails and $5 highballs).  See more below!

Want a Taste of New Orleans? Hilton is Offering Exclusive Discounts for Must-Visit Restaurants and Tours in NOLA this Summer

I was hosted by Hilton and some of their restaurant partners for this experience.  The opinions are my own.  I was not financially compensated for this post.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: New Orleans is the best food city in the US.  Any trip to the Crescent City should be experienced through it's fabulous food and drink.  On every trip we take to NOLA, we add to our list of best restaurants and must-visit spots (you can see some of our other favorite stops in and around New Orleans in this post about our road trip to New Orleans, and this Travel Tuesday post on more must-eat spots in NOLA).  This latest trip delivered several more amazing experiences to add to our list thanks to Hilton's Taste of New Orleans.

Taste of New Orleans is a summer campaign by Hilton that offers guests discounted parking, a welcome cocktail on check-in, and exclusive discounts to the hottest restaurants and tours in town for those staying with participating Hilton hotels in New Orleans between now and September 10.  Just visit Travel.Hilton.com/New-Orleans and select a hotel to book your Taste of New Orleans reservation.  I had the chance to experience this with the Hilton New Orleans/St. Charles Avenue just last weekend.  Keep reading to see my reviews of each tour and restaurant we had the chance to visit for Taste of New Orleans as we soaked up the culture and cuisine of this fabulous city.

Wedding Planning in the Digital Age – You Don’t Have to Take on Life’s Mysteries Alone

I have been compensated for this post by Oros. However, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

In less than one week my husband and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. When I look back, on one hand I'm amazed by how fast the time has flown by. But on the other hand, it seems like it was a lifetime ago. So much was different: we didn't have our kids, we had a lot fewer lines around our eyes and on our foreheads, and life was slower and a bit less connected. Being less connected, I didn't yet have an iPhone with access to internet in my hands, and Pinterest didn't yet exist. Take that in for a second - I planned my wedding without Pinterest or iPhone apps!

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago... how different it would have been if I was planning my wedding this year instead of 10 years ago. I started thinking about how I use the new Oros app (which you can get for free for iOS or Android here: http://bit.ly/fab-everyday) for quick, trusted recommendations for local restaurants (whether here in Austin or in other cities when I'm traveling), or for things to do with my kids in Austin. I realized that Oros is perfect for all kinds of local referrals and recommendations wherever you are. You can also connect with other users nationwide for advice and ideas (read my full review of the Oros app here).

Travel Tuesday: One Day in Finland - What to Do with Kids during a Quick Trip to Helsinki

The #FabFam went to Scandinavia (Sweden and Finland) for spring break this year.  You can see more in my posts about our two days in Stockholm and about our time with in Sweden's Arctic Circle at the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi.  Today I am sharing about our quick jaunt to Helsinki, Finland.

We got the idea to add Helsinki to our itinerary from a friend, who told me that there are overnight cruise boats between the Swedish and Finnish capitals.  When I looked into this, I discovered it to be really cost- and time-effective, as you travel overnight (while you sleep), and the cost offsets a night in a hotel room (which is not cheap in Scandinavia).  In our itinerary, we had just enough time to spend one day in Helsinki.  While we'd definitely need more time there to do it justice, it was a great way to introduce ourselves to this very family-friendly city.

When we were doing research on what to do with the kids during a quick trip there, we came across this is a great post with lots of things to do with kids in Helsinki.  Some of the top recommendations included Suomenlinna Fortress (Sveaborg), Vessiko submarine, Seurassari Open-Air Museum, the Natural History Museum, they Heureka Interactive Center, Horseshoe Finnish Toy Museum, Linnanmaki Amusement Park, Korkeasaari Zoo, and the Botanical Garden (Kasvitieteellinen puutarha).  Keep reading to see what we did, and more about how to get to Helsinki from Stockholm.

The boys had a lot of fun on the Viking cruise from Stockholm to Helsinki (but were really cold when we stepped outside for this photo)

Flashback Friday: Our Old Hollywood-Themed Engagement Photo Session

My husband and I celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary this month.  TENTH.  Where in the heck did the time go?  Even more crazy is that it will be 15 years total together for us in October.  It's been about 15 years since this dashingly handsome man walked into mine, out of all the gin joints in all the world.  One day, I'll write our love story, but today, I'll open a chapter of it for you.

10 years ago, I didn't have Fab Everyday.   But I did have my planning bio and a blog on TheKnot.com while I was planning my wedding.  In fact, all that sort of led to the creation of Fab Everyday (but more on that later this year when I celebrate Fab Everyday's 10th anniversary).  I documented all of the details for planning my wedding on The Knot so that it might save another person time and effort when planning theirs.  Knot bios included inspiration collages, reviews, and so much more.  See, young whipper-snapper, this was before Pinterest existed when we had to make our own planning and inspiration boards (after walking uphill in the snow with our Blackberries).

What to Do In Austin: Deep Eddy Vodka Tasting Room

I was hosted for a tasting and distillery tour by Deep Eddy Vodka.  The opinions are my own based on my experience.

I was invited on a media trip to visit the Deep Eddy Vodka Tasting Room and take a tour of the distillery.  It was so cool learning about the history of Deep Eddy and their process for distilling and bottling their vodkas.  Let me tell you - I already can't wait to experience the Tasting Room again for a girl's weekend in Austin.  A visit to Deep Eddy's Tasting Room would be a perfect activity for a bachelorette party or birthday celebration, or for anyone looking for something fun to do to "keep it local" when visiting Austin.

Travel Tuesday: Visiting Sweden's Icehotel and Touring Swedish Lapland with Kids

The #FabFam recently went to Scandinavia (Sweden and Finland).  A few weeks ago I posted about our two days in Stockholm.  Today I am sharing about our time with the kids in Sweden's Arctic Circle at the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi.  Our itinerary was built on personally curated recommendations based on our family's interests from Explorateur Journeys (you might remember Explorateur Journeys from our magical Kenyan safari trip).

Our trip brought us to Swedish Lapland for a few different reasons.  One was that seeing the northern lights (or aurora borealis) has been on my bucket list for as far as I can remember.  Another was that staying in a hotel made of ice was on my bucket list ever since seeing a viral video about it on Facebook.  Icehotel Sweden met both criteria, as it is located 200K north of the Arctic Circle in an area with very little light pollution, making it a prime spot to see the aurora if conditions were right.  My family being accustomed to warm weather (with me growing up in Southern California and my husband growing up in Texas), we decided to take a leap outside our comfort zone to have an experience like none we've ever had, and take advantage of all we could during our time there.  Today I am sharing our experience visiting with our young children in tow.

How I Crowd-Sourced Ideas for the Ultimate Family Date Day in Austin, TX

I have been compensated for this post by Oros. However, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Does your family ever do “family date night” or “family day?” We love to plan family-friendly outings, and with the three-day weekend and lots of long summer days coming up, we are looking for new things to do in Austin with kids. Now that I’ve got the new Oros messaging app (you can download it for free for iOS or Android here: http://bit.ly/fab-everyday), I knew that it was my go-to for planning a full day of things to do with the family.
