Happy New Year! The beginning of a new year inspires new goals, fresh starts, and new beginnings. For me this year, this manifested in the desire for some home décor updates. Since we had a very busy holiday season between parties, travel, and the usual holiday craziness, there wasn’t time or energy to do much just yet. However, I realized that a quick update for our living room décor was as easy as picking up some new fabric and spending an afternoon at the sewing machine.
Our living room throw pillows were not only starting to fade, but the black and white color scheme needed a refresh. I wanted to add an accent color and fresh patterns without having to change the entire color scheme of the room. Here is the before and after:
First, I went to my local Jo-Ann store for some new fabric during their holiday sale. I decided to change the black and white pillow fabric to gray and white, and also wanted something that included an accent color. I narrowed it down to these two fabric choices:
I was able to re-purpose some of my existing throw pillow inserts, which helped save cost for the project. I also bought a few new inserts at Jo-Ann so I could have a few extra pillows.
Next step: using the measurements from the pillow inserts, I went to work sewing the simple square pillow covers.
After sewing the pillow covers almost all of the way, I inserted the pillow and manually (by hand) sewed the rest of the cover shut around the pillow. This saved a lot of time instead of making a removable cover with a zipper or button closure.
Here is how it all came together with my dark gray Ikea Kivik couches and some of my DIY Crate & Barrel framed wall art:
The floor lamp and the quatrefoil area rug were previously purchased from Target.
